Football is very different than the other major sports in America. There is a risk of injury with any physical activity but football has grown men hitting one another running at high speeds. Injuries are part of the game, we just hope that they don’t leave lasting effects. There was recently an unfortunate situation where a player, Jamal Davis, injuries have left him paralyzed from the neck down.

The Seminoles released a statement

The Brooklyn Seminoles, have created a fund to help Jamal Davis financially. Donations to this cause will help Jamal with his livelihood; help pay his hospital bills and take care of a younger brother who Jamal takes care of and who suffers from High Function Autism. Jamal mother passed away October 5th 2007.
Jamal Davis was born at Kings County Hospital August 5, 1977. He attended Sheepshead Bay High School and Interboro Institute. Jamal worked as a Technician Specialist for three years, but during his pass time sports is his passion. Jamal has been an athlete since the age of 6 where he played basketball at PS221, in Junior High School he played baseball at IS391 and football for Sheepshead Bay High. In 2008, Jamal played for the Brooklyn Seminoles as a cornerback (#4); and on September 7, he was injured on the first play of the game against the NYC Falcons. Jamal’s back and neck was broken in three places. He was taken to Kings County Hospital and later moved to Mt. Sinai in Manhattan. Today, there are plans to move Jamal to a nursing home where he can be better treated and more physical therapy can be administered (therapy which he receives 4 times per day).
You can help Jamal by donating to this fund because we believe “we must stand together and help each other, especially in times of need”. An account has been set up through Capital One Bank. You are able to make donations to the account number 7047043683. All funds will be for Jamal Davis. Any question or suggestions, please feel free to contact Nathalie (Jamal’s cousin) at 347-581-6511 (the best day for contact is Tuesday and Wednesday) or Devon Thompson (CEO of the Brooklyn Seminoles) at 347-768-2439. Please do not hesitate to call.
Thank you in advance for your support.

JAMAL DAVIS (#4 CB) ”A man of courage is also full of faith ” Please join The Brooklyn Seminolesin prayer for Jamal. Our hearts and thoughts go out to his family…Seminoles we stand strong, hold our heads high for Jamal…1 FAMILY! “You lift me, and I’ll lift you, and we’ll ascend together.”

Teams, Players and Fans!

The 2009 season doesn’t start until July 11, 2009, but this doesn’t mean there is nothing to do until then. Since returning from the championship weekend in Atlanta, I have been busy working on improving communication with the teams to make sure that this year is even better than before! One of the first tasks I tackled with this goal in mind is appointing Conference Commissioners for each of the four NAFL conferences. This is a way to make sure information is disseminated to all, and the teams all feel they have someone other than me they can communicate to in the event they cannot reach me. These individuals are in place to assist me in communicating to all of you and making sure that you get an answer to your questions faster than ever. I still want team owners, coaches and players to feel they can contact me, and I will respond as I have in the past, but this gives all of you another means to get someone to hear and recognize when there is an issue.

The 2009 NAFL Conference Commissioners are as follows:

Eastern Conference - Ron Kerr
Southern Conference - Bill Caldwell
Western Conference - Lorrie Rarey (back by popular demand)
Northern Conference - Jordan Taylor

In case you are not familiar with these people, Ron is the owner of the Central Penn Piranha; Lorrie is the owner of the King County (WA) Jaquars; Bill is the owner of the Nashville Storm; and Jordan is the owner of the Dakota Lawdawgs. There have also been regional and divisional directors placed, and they too will be part of “Team Code Four”. Code four is a term used by law enforcement meaning everything is good and all is well. This is what we all want to see happen in 2009 and that is all teams are “code four”. Next week I will post regarding the regional people so you all know who they are. Following that, I will introduce the divisional directors.

Watch for future announcements on the 2009 season and championship weekend, because the goals this year are better communication, a great 2009 season and a bigger and better championship weekend than ever before!!

BANDITS And MALLERS Powerhouse

preseason matchup

Great matchups are hard to come by early in the season, but this is no ordinary year. Even more rare is a chance to see two teams with a combined 60 years of football in. The New York Bandits and the Albany Metro Mallers have agreed on a pre-season game for June 20th. 2009. The New York Bandits have played all around the country but haven’t played very many Northern NY teams. Certainly all eyes will be on Albany for this kickoff to what should be a very interesting season. With teams shuffling leagues and the dust settling freom all the new teams that sprouted up, and of course the weaker teams meeting their demise by folding for whatever reason. 2009 should be a year that sees the stronger programs prevail. In 2008 there were many programs that have 10 + years in that hoisted trophies at the end of the season.

The Mallers, NFA and Harvest Bowl 2008 Champions will be a formidable pre-season match up for the Boys in Blue. “Its not every day you get to play a great team in pre-season action, so this will be a real test”, says Coach Billy Badson. The Mallers, on the strength of their Harvest Bowl XII championship, which included victories over nationally ranked Brooklyn and Connecticut, have vaulted to the #3 spot in the nation. With the Prince William Monarchs placing at #4 after their Metro Bowl title win.

TheBandits didn’t do too shabby in 2008 as well, finishing with a 15-1 record. Although the polls seem to have forgotten the Boys in Blue, we are sure Coach Badson’s 70 point in a game offense to go along with their perrenial dominating defense is on a lot of people’s radars. Stay tuned for the specifics, but June in Albany is definately the place to be.

The Brooklyn Mariners did it the hard way in 2008. After dropping their last two games of regular season and getting into the RAFL playoffs as a wild card, They had to go on the road to Connecticut to defeat the NE Knights (8-1-1), then to Plainfield to squeak by their long time rival Wolves (8-2). After that, they went across the bridge to Staten Island and took out the then undefeated Predators (10-0) before heading to Scranton for their rematch with the defending champion Prince William Monarchs.

The Mariners came out strong, and took the opening drive 68 yards capped off by an end around by Sandiford Joseph (Co game MVP) and extra point conversion to take an early 7-0 lead. After putting together two first downs, the Monarchs were forced to punt. The Mariners drove again, this time stalling out at the 16 yard line where they added a field goal to pull to a 10-0 advantage. After a Monarch three and out, the Mariners would drive another 40+ yards and kick their second field goal of the contest to tack on a 13-0 advantage.

Three drives, three scores. The mariners had set the pace. Their defense was stifling at times, led by #42 Shawn McGlin. The Monarchs and Mariners both had problems moving the ball the rest of the half as the Monarchs settled in. The two teams would go to halftime at 13-0.

The second half began with opportunity for the Monarchs. Darrel Overton (Co MVP) feverishly escaped the Mariner rush, and gained some yards on the ground. The Overton then connected on a 45 yard pass that brought the Monarchs down inside the Mariner 20. After gaining a few more precious yards, the Monarchs were stone walled by the tenacious Mariner defense. The Monarchs were willing to settle for a field goal attempt, but the Mariners would have none of that. On the attempt, four Mariners came crashing through and thwarted the Monarch attempt and kept the shut out in tact.

After a three and out, the Mariners punted again giving the Monarchs good field position and opportunity would present itself again for the defending champs. On second down, Overton had a man wide open, deep down the sideline. A good pass into the end zone was a touchdown, but it was not to be. Overton’s pass sailed towards the sideline, and the receiver couldn’t catch it with both feet in bounds at the Mariner 3 yard line. Again, the Monarchs would come away empty handed.

Overton kept his team getting close with QB draws and whams, and the Monarchs would get in the red zone two more times, but just couldn’t get it in.

After a late 4th quarter turnover, the Mariners would do what champions do. They put it away, on the ground and scored the nail in the coffin with under 2 minutes left to leave the final score at Mariners 20, Monarchs 0. Congratulations to Pudgey Walsh, and the Brooklyn Mariners. 2008 Atlantic Bowl Champions. They are now king of the RAFL mountain.

Maybe its the debate that we love so much or it could be that logistics are just not there. At any rate, Semi-pro football has sort of aligned itself to resemble the crowning process of college football and not its professional counterpart. This year saw the crowning of a few champions, some were new to the big dance and some were perennial powerhouses resuming their place at the top. So with polls coming out and everyone in the semi-pro community having their opinion we may actually see a real East Coast Champion crowned in 2009.

The SemiPro BCS Website was created to establish rankings for the SemiPro football community. The site is not in anyway in competiton with any other ranking website or ranking committee. This is a national ranking system that will use a modified BCS formula suited for SemiPro Football to calculate a numeric vaule for participating teams.

The SemiPro BCS Rankings does not contemplate league standings as a component of the rankings. This means that a 2nd or 3rd place team in a league who has lost 1 or 2 games may actually rank higher than an undefeated team in first place of the same league if the 2nd or 3rd place team has a higher precentage of criteria points. What they will do is accurately report league standings, scores and top performers each week based on information that is provided to them by all the area leagues. Rankings will be posted every Wednesday of the following game week.

This will have a major effect on the scheduling for the 2010 season as once all leagues and teams sign up at http://www.semiprobcs.com/ the rankings will more than likely create some intriguing matchups in the postseason tournaments and invitationals. It also will rank the area’s top players by statistical categories that will be profiled on league websites as well as the forum. The new system could make the great talent in the area become household names and potentially open doors as we have seen many teams in the area go towards the ”youth movement” and producing some players with college and even professional talent (arena, overseas leagues).

The BNEFF staff will take steps in becoming a major league in the 2009. New teams are applying for admission into the league daily. The League will look to maybe add six new teams in the 2009 season. Many of the teams applying are established team that have been around minor league football for many years. That is a good sign. To have teams with history wanting o be part of a two year old league show that whatever the BNEFF is doing, it’s doing it the right way.

After only two seasons, a BNEFF have been recognized by the National Football Coaches Poll. TheNW Giantshave been ranked sixth (6) in the NFCP. This placed them above powerhouse teams like the (9) NY Bandits, (10) Brooklyn Mariners and the NY Predators. With the Giants having such a great season and the quality of the rest of the teams in the league, it pushed the BNEFF right into the spotlight and into the top 30 teams in the Nation.

“We are very proud to have made such great strides in such a short time.” said Commissioner Girven. “The hard work that the Board members put into this league and the dedication from each organization will only continue to push the league higher in the rankings.” Teams like the Longhorns, Packers, Vikings and the Spartans are making great strides to become top organizations in the BNEFF and that will only make the league better in the future.

Often times the Spartans knew that this noble mission would result in its talent taking their contributions and ability to other places to thrive. But those are the breaks….as today Offensive Coordinator Jeff Barnes has accepted the Head Coaching job for the Westchester Packers. Barnes directed the Spartan offense to a very successful Spring Tournament and BNEFF regular season. “Jeff is a great coach and the Packers made a wise choice, Jeff has a very deep knowledge of the game and his work ethic transfers to the players around him ” Coach Patterson said of the news and added, “we (the Spartans) are very happy for him, it will be very hard to replace him but I hear Eric Mangini is looking for a job today.”

7 December 2008 - The CFA Champion Conshohocken Steelers hosted the Champions from the IFL in a battle of league kings. The game didn’t last long as the Steelers completely dominated the Frankford Chiefs in every aspect of the game. The Steelers took the opening kickoff to the Chiefs 40-yard line and then followed with a 40-yard TD by RB Brian Petis. The Steelers defense was equally as impressive holding the Chiefs to three (3) first downs, one of which was on a personal foul. The penalty led to a field goal by the visiting Chiefs, the only points they would score. The Steelers answered their opponents score with an impressive 55-yard “ground” drive, culminating with a John Noble TD from the 5-yard line. After another imposing defensive stand the Steeler “O” went back work. The Steelers’ opened the drive with a 40-yard flea flicker to Anthony Powell and ended the scoring drive with a 45-yard reverse for a touchdown by Phil Poole.Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately for the visiting Chiefs, the game had to be stopped in the middle of the second quarter with the Steelers comfortably ahead 21-3. Due to misconduct the game was called, sadly ending in the arrest of a Chief player thus ending the battle of champions - which was not as much of a battle as everyone expected. The Steelers have been invited to play with the countries elite teams in Florida this January. Stay tuned for details.
